Driver Suffering From Whiplash After Traffic Collision

As personal injury lawyers in South Florida, our Delray Beach injury attorneys at the Law Offices of Aronberg & Aronberg routinely represent individuals who have been injured in auto accidents caused by the negligence or recklessness of other drivers. South Florida’s tropical climate and disproportionately dangerous roadways make auto safety a key concern for all of us who share the road with one another.

In this blog post, we are going to share just some of the “safe driving tips” that have been largely agreed-upon by auto safety experts in recent years. In an effort to decrease your likelihood of being involved in an auto accident, keep the following tips in mind.

Avoid the Fast Lane

  • While the so-called “fast lane” might seem enticing, especially when you are in a hurry, it is at such a point in time to remember that the far-left lane is really just the “passing lane.” Yes, cars travelling in that lane will go faster than the others, but just as a means of passing another vehicle slowing them down; after passing such vehicle, the car in the “fast lane” is supposed to move back over to a regular travel lane.
  • The fact is, remaining in the fast lane is dangerous, as our Delray Beach personal injury attorneys know. Research has shown that most car accidents occur in the far-left lane. So to avoid such accidents (as a matter of probability) and to be able to maneuver out of the way of dangerous collisions, stay in the center or far-right lane(s), which provide easy “escape routes,” such as various other lanes or the right shoulder (emergency lane).

Keep Your Distance

  • As the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has shown through their research, rear-end accidents account for roughly 29 percent of all auto accidents. The best way to avoid rear-ending the car in front of you is to have adequate space between your two vehicles, allowing you sufficient time to (if necessary) hit the brakes and avoid crashing into the car in front of you. In today’s world, it is very difficult to avoid distracted driving, with cell phones ringing, radios blaring, etc. With such a level of distraction, it is crucial to leave adequate distance between your car and the car ahead of you, just in case you need to slam on the brakes.
  • So, what is a safe following distance? Generally, as our Delray Beach personal injury attorneys know, in perfectly safe driving conditions, a safe driving distance will be attained when you pass a stationary object (a street light or a tree beside the road, for instance) at least three seconds after the car ahead of you passes the object. Of course, in dangerous driving conditions such as low visibility, bad weather, etc., that distance should be increased as appropriate.

Continually Scan the Area Ahead

  • This one is pretty straightforward, too. Make sure that, when you are driving, you are looking not just at the car in front of you, but also at the car in front of that car, and, if possible, the cars on either side of both of those cars. Looking around, and even 2 of 3 cars ahead of you, can make you aware of an accident as it happens, giving you time to react. As our Delray Beach personal injury attorneys know, if the first time you see danger ahead is when it’s directly in front of you, it might be too late to react.

There are countless other safe driving tips, many of which are available here.
