When businesses place their consumer products into the stream of commerce, it is their responsibility to ensure that the products are safe. The products they manufacture, market and sell must be safe for use by a consumer. When products cause injury to a consumer, they can be held liable for the resulting damage.
Often times, when hazards caused by a product manufacturing defect or design defect become known to the manufacturer or the government, the company (sometimes as they are required to do by the government) will issue a recall. The recall will alert consumers to the dangers of using the product. It will also offer consumers a way to exchange the product for a safer version.
Recently, the company Cuisinart (by and through its parent company Conair) issued a recall on millions of food processor blenders. There were at least 30 reports of lacerations caused by the blenders. The hazard occurs when the food processor’s riveted blade cracks over time. When it cracks, small metal pieces of the blade can break off into the processed food. This poses a serious risk of laceration to consumers. According to the U.S. Consumer Safety Protection Commission (CSPC), about 8 million units of the blender were sold in the U.S. (with an additional roughly 300,000 sold in Canada). They were sold through department, specialty stores and on the internet. They were sold from mid-1996 through the end of 2015. The affected food processors retailed for between $100 and $350.
There have been 30 reports of mouth lacerations or tooth injuries. The company received a total of 69 reports of product users finding broken pieces of the blade in processed food.
The Consumer Protection agency recommends you immediately stop using the riveted blade. As you prepare to cook meals and host guests this holiday season, be careful that the food processor is safe. The food processors affected by the recall all contain model numbers beginning with CFP-9, CFP-11, DFP-7, DFP-11, DFP-14, DLC-5, DLC-7, DLC-8, DLC-10, DLC-XP, DLC-2007, DLC-2009, DLC-2011, DLC-2014, DLC-3011, DLC-3014, EV-7, EV-10, EV-11, EV-14, KFP-7 and MP-14. The model number can be found on the bottom of the unit. According to CNet, you can call Cuisinart at 561-266-9191. Or you can visit the Cuisinart recall website at https://recall.cuisinart.com to process the replacement of the faulty blades.
