Aronberg & Aronberg Law Sponsors Dori Saves Lives To Help Promote Awareness of Florida’s Updated Law Banning Texting While Driving

The Law Offices of Aronberg & Aronberg is proud to announce its sponsorship of the Dori Saves Lives Foundation to help spread awareness regarding the dangers of distracted driving and updates on the law.

This year, the Dori Saves Lives Foundation is paying special attention to the updated Florida Law banning hand-held cell phone usage while driving. The updated law will be enforceable beginning January 1, 2020. The “Florida Ban on Texting and Driving” intends to improve roadway safety, prevent crashes related to texting while driving, reduce injuries, property damage, health care costs, and health and car insurance rates. Under this law, starting Jan. 1, 2020, law enforcement officers can stop motor vehicles and issue fines to anyone texting or using social media while driving. This law marks an important step in the fight to end distracted driving and the preventable deaths and injuries that sadly occur as a result.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted drivers have killed 3,166 people in 2017 alone. The NHTSA reports that sending or reading a text can take your attention off the road for 5 seconds or more. At a speed of 55 miles per hour, that would be like driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed.

While all drivers share a responsibility to keep the roads safe, teen and young drivers constitute the largest percentage of automobile crashes in the state of Florida. The Dori Slosberg Foundation’s Safe Driving Awareness program has been coordinated in high schools across the state – for good reason. A recent NHTSA survey found that 20% of drivers aged 18-20 reported that texting does not affect their driving and nearly 30% of drivers aged 21-34 said texting has no impact. This attitude towards distracted driving is a key part of the problem.

How Dori Saves Lives Helps

With the intention to save lives and reduce car crashes, the Safe Driving Awareness Programs through Dori Saves Lives educate parents and young drivers on safe driving practices. These programs which include the video experience entitled This Could Happen To You and campaigns including the Spread The Word Campaign, and the Zero Distracted Driving Movement, have reached over 6 million students and adults thus far. The message within these campaigns covers 5 main goals:

  1. Understanding the problem of distracted driving
  2. Recognizing the risks and consequences associated with distracted driving
  3. Implementing specific steps to help eliminate distracted driving within their families, schools, businesses, and organizations
  4. Keeping themselves, other drivers, passengers, and pedestrians safe on our roadways
  5. Understanding the new distracted driving law in Florida

The Dori Saves Lives Foundation has also created an online educational video highlighting the risk of distracted/drunk driving among young drivers. It’s free to participate and all students are awarded 2 community service hours for completing the course.

Too many lives have been taken by distracted driving. As part of the Dori Saves Lives Safety Partner Program, The Law Offices of Aronberg & Aronberg pledge to become a force towards keeping our community safe.
